National Training Clinic, First Day
of SAVRA Training August 12

This annual NCAA/PAVO national training clinic is Sunday, Aug. 12, 9:30 am-1:30 pm in Jundt Auditorium, 200 W. DeSmet, on Gonzaga’s west side of campus. Enter through the east side of the front face of Jundt under the brick canopy. With Sharp Avenue under construction, it is best to take Division/Ruby, turn east onto DeSmet, which T’s after 1 block at the Jundt Art Center and Museum. Park in the Jundt parking lot immediately in front of the building, to your right. AVOID HAMILTON.

Also Aug. 12, we begin our revised SAVRA training program in Jepson Center, just east of Jundt Center. Beginning training is in Jepson 017 (2-3:30 pm), intermediate training (primarily for HS officials) is in Jepson 014, advanced training for aspiring and newer college officials is in Jepson 120 just inside the front glass doors to the left. The latter two training sessions run 2-3 pm.

New Program Includes Three Levels of Training, On-Court Sessions

The Training Development Committee – Linda Kildew, Al Hirayama, Shawna Sheehan and Devin Darrough – have taken your survey responses and used them, in part, to develop a new three-level program that focuses on basic training for beginners through 2nd or 3rd year; intermediate training geared at primarily high school officials; and advanced training for higher-level high school and college officials. Beginning Aug. 19, training for all three groups will be conducted from 5-6 pm in Jepson before our 6-7 pm general membership meetings. Special on-court sessions are planned for all three groups on Aug. 26, Sept. 16 and Oct. 7. They will run 5-6:30 pm, and there will be no general membership meetings on those nights.

First Membership Meeting August 19

Our first general membership meeting (preceded by hour-long training sessions) is Aug. 19, 6 pm in Jepson 017. Attendance at our meetings is a requirement for working SAVRA matches.

WOA Conference Highlights

The annual Washington Officials Association Conference was held Aug. 3-4 in Yakima, and here a few highlights:

  • WOA membership cards for those officials who registered by June 15, will be mailed soon, and can be used for entry into our state tournaments at no extra charge.

  • National Association of Sports Officials insurance benefits have doubled. WOA officials are members of NASO, and the maximum coverage per occurrence has moved from $3 million to $6 million.

  • The NASO annual training summit (all sports) comes to Spokane, July 26-30, 2019. Registration fee is $475. Scholarships are available. You’ll be able to apply for a scholarship on the WOA website once that page is posted later this fall.

  • WOA is considering a return to black pants and black shoes for officials, and referees across the state will be queried about their thoughts on this in the coming months.

  • Go to umpire.com, get 10% off any purchase as long as you give them your NASO member number. Fox40, whistle-maker, offers a 25% discount online at Fox40shop.com. When checking out, enter discount code WOA25.

  • Thanks to Shawna Sheehan, Mike Pounds and Bob Francis for representing SAVRA’s interests at this annual WOA Conference.
